Guildford City?
Guildford
is a town, even though we have a Cathedral, and is regularly claimed to
be a city and Guildford has applied to become a city on several
occasions.
In 2002 another application was made but was again unsuccessful, where as Preston, was granted city status.
Historically, a town with diocesan cathedral is given the status of a city, and the fact that we have a University is is another factor in determining city status.
One would have thought Guildford Having both of these requirements would have been enough. Not only this we have a very full social history. We are also a rich commercial centre for Surrey and Surrey hasn't got a city, what's going on?
Unusually, Guildfords admin takes place in Kingston which was originally a part of Surrey. Kingstone now resides in the Greater London area.
The Surrey Police have their headquarters in Guildford, as do the Governments South Eastern department.
